must needs in life: weekend getaways.
I think we all forget that we work to live, not live to work. We need to unplug and get away from our daily routines on the regular. Whether it is a quick day trip to the beach, a one-night getaway or long weekend to unwind on a beach, the mountains or in nature, we need it.
Last weekend I took a one night getaway to Leavenworth, Washington. It is a little Bavarian town about two hours East of the city. It is amazing it practically transports you to Austria or Germany. The Hotel staff even wore lederhosen, which was pretty amazing! It is literally a tiny German town tucked away about 25 miles East of Steven's pass and it is a gem.
It is a beautiful drive there, we stopped along the way maybe 15 or 20 minutes outside of Leavenworth at a tiny coffee stand called Little Red's Bakery. If you go, stop. Besides the fact that the coffee is phenomenal, the owner hand writes the most amazing coffee quotes on each cup. Also, get the chocolate chip cookie, it's huge, you can totally split it, but it's so good you may want to keep the other half for later!
It snowed the entire time we were there, which was absolutely beautiful. Friday afternoon when we arrived, we walked from our hotel to Muchen Haus for some beer, bratwurst and pretzels. Heaven. This place is a must stop. There is typically a line around the corner, but it is an outdoor bar, most of it is under cover and has heaters. A few of the bigger tables have fire places in the middle that are so fun as the snow is falling down.
I spent most of the afternoon in the room resting and working as I was dealing with a back flare. But we got dressed up and walked around in the dark and looked at the lights and played in the snow after a late dinner at a hidden Italian Restaurant, Visconti's.
I got up and walked around the streets of the little Bavarian city in the morning just in awe that I wasn't wondering the streets of Switzerland, Salzburg or Munich. We made a second stop at Munchen Haus for another pretzel before we hit the road to pick up Gus from Daycare.
On our way out of town, we stopped at Red's one last time for a coffee to keep us awake on the ride. I cannot believe this place is so close to Seattle, and that it's taken me 8 years to make my way here.
After this weekend I learned it's just good for your soul to take someone you love and get out of dodge for the weekend. We all need it to recharge and start the week fresh.
Cheers,
